What we do

Evaluation and medication management for Rancho Palos Verdes

We are a psychiatric practice, not a therapy group and not a clinic directory. That means diagnosis, medication, and someone who keeps track of how you are actually doing over time.

  • Psychiatry Services

Comprehensive psychiatric care, including diagnosis, treatment planning, and ongoing management led by a board-certified provider.

  • Medication Management

Careful selection, monitoring, and adjustment of psychiatric medications to maximize benefit and minimize side effects.

  • Psychiatric Evaluation

A thorough first assessment to understand your history and symptoms and build an accurate diagnosis and plan.

What a first visit looks like

A full psychiatric evaluation runs about an hour. We go through what brought you in, your history, what you have tried before and how it went, physical health and medications, and what you want to be different. You leave with a working diagnosis where one is clear, a plan, and a follow-up booked, not a referral to somewhere else.

Follow-ups are shorter, usually every few weeks at first and further apart once things are steady. Medication changes are made deliberately, one at a time, so it stays possible to tell what is working.

In person or by video, from Rancho Palos Verdes

Both are real options and the clinical care is the same. Video visits are secure and available anywhere in California, which for most people makes the first appointment in person and the routine follow-ups from home or on a work break.

If getting here is the thing standing between you and treatment, take the video visit rather than skipping the care. That is what it is for.

New patients see Irine Achuamang, a psychiatric-mental health nurse practitioner. Dr. Cho provides collaborating physician oversight.

Paying for care

How Rancho Palos Verdes residents tend to be insured

We are in network with 19 commercial carriers, including Aetna, Anthem, Beacon Health Options, Carelon, Cigna and others, and you can check your own plan below before booking anything. That list includes TRICARE and TriWest, so service members, veterans and military families are billed like anyone else here.

We do not currently take Medi-Cal managed care. If that is your coverage, we are a self-pay option rather than a covered visit, and it is better to know that now than at the front desk. Self-pay is $250 for a 60-minute initial psychiatric evaluation and $150 for a 30-minute follow-up visit, and there is a sliding scale. Please ask.

About visiting us from Rancho Palos Verdes

Rancho Palos Verdes exists because people wanted a say over their coastline. In December 1969 the county adopted a master plan that allowed high-density building along the shore, and in April 1970 residents formed a group called Save Our Coastline to bring the unincorporated land under local control. The election came on August 28, 1973, and cityhood won by a margin of five to one. The city still describes itself as the youngest of the four cities on the Peninsula. Sixteen years later, in November 1989, its voters went further and passed Proposition M, a view preservation and restoration ordinance. It is a place that has organised, more than once, to protect how it looks and how it lives.

That history shows in what the city owns. The Palos Verdes Nature Preserve covers roughly 1,500 acres in 11 reserves open to the public, owned by the city and co-managed with the Palos Verdes Peninsula Land Conservancy. The Point Vicente Interpretive Center opened in 1984 beside the lighthouse, and the city sends people there between December and April to watch the gray whales pass. We ran its address through the Census geocoder and it resolves to Rancho Palos Verdes, which on a peninsula of four neighbouring cities is worth checking rather than assuming. Land area works out at 13.473 square miles holding about 40,864 people, roughly 3,033 per square mile.

The drive down to us is long but predictable. From City Hall on Hawthorne Boulevard at 11.30am on Tuesday 29 September 2026, the 405 measured 22.4 miles and about 36 minutes. Crenshaw Boulevard was the shortest route at 17.3 miles and took about 38, and Palos Verdes Drive West onto the 710 took about 39. We sampled it again at 11.53am on Sunday 4 October and the 405 came back at about 35. One minute between a weekday and a Sunday says the late-morning trip is governed by distance more than traffic. Rush hour is a different story and was not sampled, so plan around 36 as a floor.

There is no realistic way in without a car. The nearest Metro rail station is Redondo Beach Station, about 10.5 straight-line miles from City Hall, and despite the name it is inside Hawthorne. In Metro’s bus timetable for Tuesday 6 October 2026, no Metro bus calling within half a mile of City Hall continues to the stops beside our office or to an A Line station. If driving is not an option, video is the honest answer, and it covers evaluation, medication and follow-up anywhere in California.

Insurance is rarely the sticking point. About 84.7 percent of working-age residents carry commercial coverage, the kind we contract with: 69.3 percent through an employer and 15.4 percent bought directly. Only 3.7 percent are on Medi-Cal, which we do not currently bill, and 4.0 percent have no coverage. If you buy your own plan, give us the carrier and plan name when you call, because individually purchased networks vary. About 4.2 percent of civilian adults here are veterans, and TRICARE and TriWest are among the carriers we accept.

One more local fact deserves a careful sentence. The city publishes regular land movement updates, and its update of September 9, 2026 reported that the average rate of movement had fallen below one inch per week for the first time since October 2023. We mention it only because long uncertainty about a home is the kind of strain that tends to surface in sleep and concentration, sometimes after the news improves. If that is part of your picture, it is a fair thing to raise at an appointment.

Our part is psychiatric. We assess, reach a working diagnosis, start medication where it is the right tool, and review closely enough to adjust it. We do not run weekly talking therapy. Where that would help, we will say so at the first visit so you can arrange it nearer home.

Rancho Palos Verdes sits in the county’s Service Area 8. In a crisis, call or text 988 at any hour, or reach the county’s ACCESS Center on (800) 854-7771.

Frequently asked questions

Does the day of the week change the drive from Rancho Palos Verdes?

Less than you might expect, at least in late morning. The 405 took about 36 minutes from City Hall at 11.30am on a Tuesday and about 35 at 11.53am on a Sunday, over the same 22.4 miles. Neither sample was a rush hour, and the 405 at 5pm is another matter, so treat 36 as the floor for a weekday visit.

Is Crenshaw Boulevard quicker because it is shorter?

Not when we checked. Crenshaw was the shortest way in at 17.3 miles but took about 38 minutes on the Tuesday, two more than the longer run down the 405. Distance is not what decides this trip. Take whichever route you find calmer to drive.

Can I reach you without a car from the Peninsula?

Not practically. The nearest Metro rail station is Redondo Beach Station, about 10.5 miles from City Hall and actually in Hawthorne, and in Metro's timetable for a regular weekday no Metro bus from near City Hall runs on to the stops by our office. For most people here a video visit is the realistic alternative to driving.

I buy my own plan rather than having one through work. Does that matter?

It is common here: about 15.4 percent of working-age residents buy coverage directly. A plan you purchase yourself is commercial insurance, so it may well be one we contract with. Plans bought individually vary in their networks, though, so tell us the carrier and plan name and we will check before anything is booked.

Months of uncertainty about our home have left me sleeping badly. Is that worth raising?

Yes. Long stretches of not knowing what will happen to a home tend to show up as broken sleep, a short fuse and trouble concentrating, often well after the worst news has passed. That is a reasonable thing to bring to an evaluation. We look at sleep, mood and anxiety together and work out what, if anything, needs treatment.

How often would I need to come in person?

Once is usually enough. The first assessment benefits from an hour in the same room, and after that most reviews can happen by secure video anywhere in California. Seventy minutes of round trip for a half-hour check on how a medication is working is a cost with no clinical benefit.
