What we do
Evaluation and medication management for San Pedro
We are a psychiatric practice, not a therapy group and not a clinic directory. That means diagnosis, medication, and someone who keeps track of how you are actually doing over time.
Psychiatry Services
Comprehensive psychiatric care, including diagnosis, treatment planning, and ongoing management led by a board-certified provider.
Medication Management
Careful selection, monitoring, and adjustment of psychiatric medications to maximize benefit and minimize side effects.
Psychiatric Evaluation
A thorough first assessment to understand your history and symptoms and build an accurate diagnosis and plan.
What a first visit looks like
A full psychiatric evaluation runs about an hour. We go through what brought you in, your history, what you have tried before and how it went, physical health and medications, and what you want to be different. You leave with a working diagnosis where one is clear, a plan, and a follow-up booked, not a referral to somewhere else.
Follow-ups are shorter, usually every few weeks at first and further apart once things are steady. Medication changes are made deliberately, one at a time, so it stays possible to tell what is working.
In person or by video, from San Pedro
Both are real options and the clinical care is the same. Video visits are secure and available anywhere in California, which for most people makes the first appointment in person and the routine follow-ups from home or on a work break.
If getting here is the thing standing between you and treatment, take the video visit rather than skipping the care. That is what it is for.
New patients see Irine Achuamang, a psychiatric-mental health nurse practitioner. Dr. Cho provides collaborating physician oversight.
Paying for care
Two San Pedro ZIP codes, two coverage pictures
We are in network with 19 commercial carriers, including Aetna, Anthem, Beacon Health Options, Carelon, Cigna and others, and you can check your own plan below before booking anything. That list includes TRICARE and TriWest, so service members, veterans and military families are billed like anyone else here.
We do not currently take Medi-Cal managed care. If that is your coverage, we are a self-pay option rather than a covered visit, and it is better to know that now than at the front desk. Self-pay is $250 for a 60-minute initial psychiatric evaluation and $150 for a 30-minute follow-up visit, and there is a sliding scale. Please ask.

About visiting us from San Pedro
For San Pedro the bridge decides the trip. The Vincent Thomas Bridge, named after Assemblyman Vincent Thomas of San Pedro and opened in 1963, is the obvious way across the harbor toward Long Beach. When we sampled the drive from the Municipal Building on South Beacon Street at 11.30am on Tuesday 29 September 2026, Google marked every route it offered as avoiding road closures before that bridge. All three came back at about 22 minutes, Google’s first choice being the 710 at 12.1 miles. On Sunday 4 October at 11.53am the routes were still going around it, and the 710 took about 20 minutes over 11.4 miles. So treat those as detour times. We did not sample a rush hour, and we have not tried to describe the closure itself, only what it did to the directions.
San Pedro is a community inside the City of Los Angeles rather than a city of its own. It was annexed, along with Wilmington, on August 28, 1909, which is why the Census has no San Pedro row and why this page measures it by ZIP area. Our Los Angeles page covers the city as a whole. The city’s San Pedro Community Plan, updated in 2017, names the neighbourhoods of Point Fermin, the Palisades, Vinegar Hill and Rancho San Pedro, and the differences between them show up clearly in the numbers below.
Those numbers come from two ZIP Code Tabulation Areas, and ZIP areas never follow neighbourhood lines exactly. ZIP area 90731, the one that includes the Municipal Building, has about 61,944 people and a median household income of $76,395. There, 54.7 percent of working-age adults hold commercial insurance, the kind we contract with, while 23.4 percent are on Medi-Cal and 13.8 percent have no coverage. ZIP area 90732, which also carries San Pedro addresses inside Los Angeles city, has about 23,067 people and a median household income of $120,807, and there 75.3 percent hold commercial coverage, 12.3 percent are on Medi-Cal and 5.0 percent are uninsured. Two quite different coverage pictures inside one community. We do not currently bill Medi-Cal. That is the clinic’s present position rather than a permanent one, and it is better said here than discovered at booking. If you are uninsured, ask about self-pay rates and the sliding scale and we will say plainly whether it can work.
Without a car, San Pedro is awkward for us to reach. The nearest rail stations are on the A Line in downtown Long Beach, the closest about 5.43 straight-line miles from the Municipal Building, and all of them are inside Long Beach. In Metro’s bus timetable for Tuesday 6 October 2026, no Metro bus runs from stops near the Municipal Building to the stops beside our office. The J Line runs 38 trips that day, but it heads north toward downtown Los Angeles, and riding it there to catch the A Line back south takes more than an hour and a half in the vehicle. Video visits are the practical answer here, and they cover evaluation, medication and follow-up anywhere in California.
The harbor has its own long memory. Point Fermin Lighthouse was built in 1874 from California redwood and joined the National Register of Historic Places in 1972. Cabrillo Marine Aquarium on Stephen M White Drive has been open since 1935 and is run by the city’s Recreation and Parks department. The Los Angeles Maritime Museum sits in the old Municipal Ferry Building, where ferries carried cars and passengers across the Main Channel from 1941 until 1963, the same year the bridge opened.
As for what we do: a psychiatric evaluation that takes its time, a working diagnosis, medication when it suits the problem, and follow-ups to check it is working. Weekly counselling is not part of our service, and when it would help we will say so at the start.
Hallucinations, fixed false beliefs, or thinking that stops hanging together can point to one of the psychotic disorders, which change how the brain processes reality. They are treatable, particularly when help starts early.
San Pedro is in the county’s Service Area 8, the same one as our office. Anyone in crisis can call or text 988 at any hour.

Frequently asked questions
How long does it take to get from San Pedro to your office?
About 22 minutes when we sampled it at 11.30am on a Tuesday, and about 20 at the same time on a Sunday. Both samples were routed around a closure near the Vincent Thomas Bridge, so they are detour times rather than the normal crossing. Neither was a rush hour, and the 710 at commuting times is a slower road.
Why are there two sets of insurance numbers for San Pedro?
Because San Pedro is part of the City of Los Angeles, the Census has no separate figure for it, and the closest honest measure is its two ZIP areas. In 90731 about 54.7 percent of working-age adults have commercial insurance; in 90732 it is about 75.3 percent. Those are very different neighbourhoods inside one community.
We are on Medi-Cal. Is that something you bill?
Not currently. In ZIP area 90731 about 23.4 percent of working-age adults are covered that way, so it is a fair question and we would rather answer it up front. It reflects where the clinic is now, not a permanent rule. The county's ACCESS Center on (800) 854-7771 can connect you with Medi-Cal psychiatric care, and San Pedro sits in its Service Area 8.
Is there a bus or train from San Pedro to Long Beach Boulevard?
Not a sensible one. The nearest rail stations are in downtown Long Beach, more than five miles away, and on a regular weekday no Metro bus runs from near the Municipal Building to our stops. The J Line heads north to downtown Los Angeles instead. For most people without a car, a video visit is the better choice.
Years after a frightening event I still startle easily and avoid reminders. Can you help?
Yes. Lasting jumpiness, nightmares, avoidance and feeling on guard long after a traumatic event can be post-traumatic stress disorder, and it can begin months or years later. It is treatable. An evaluation looks at what happened, how it affects you now, and whether medication is part of the plan.
San Pedro is part of Los Angeles. Is there a page for the rest of the city?
Yes. Our Los Angeles page covers the city as a whole, from the harbor to the San Fernando Valley, including a single A Line train from downtown to near our office. This page is written for San Pedro specifically, because the harbor end of the city is a very different trip.
