What we do

Evaluation and medication management for Rolling Hills Estates

We are a psychiatric practice, not a therapy group and not a clinic directory. That means diagnosis, medication, and someone who keeps track of how you are actually doing over time.

  • Psychiatry Services

Comprehensive psychiatric care, including diagnosis, treatment planning, and ongoing management led by a board-certified provider.

  • Medication Management

Careful selection, monitoring, and adjustment of psychiatric medications to maximize benefit and minimize side effects.

  • Psychiatric Evaluation

A thorough first assessment to understand your history and symptoms and build an accurate diagnosis and plan.

What a first visit looks like

A full psychiatric evaluation runs about an hour. We go through what brought you in, your history, what you have tried before and how it went, physical health and medications, and what you want to be different. You leave with a working diagnosis where one is clear, a plan, and a follow-up booked, not a referral to somewhere else.

Follow-ups are shorter, usually every few weeks at first and further apart once things are steady. Medication changes are made deliberately, one at a time, so it stays possible to tell what is working.

In person or by video, from Rolling Hills Estates

Both are real options and the clinical care is the same. Video visits are secure and available anywhere in California, which for most people makes the first appointment in person and the routine follow-ups from home or on a work break.

If getting here is the thing standing between you and treatment, take the video visit rather than skipping the care. That is what it is for.

Paying for care

What residents here usually have for coverage

We are in network with 19 commercial carriers, including Aetna, Anthem, Beacon Health Options, Carelon, Cigna and others, and you can check your own plan below before booking anything. That list includes TRICARE and TriWest, so service members, veterans and military families are billed like anyone else here.

We do not currently take Medi-Cal managed care. If that is your coverage, we are a self-pay option rather than a covered visit, and it is better to know that now than at the front desk. Self-pay is $250 for a 60-minute initial psychiatric evaluation and $150 for a 30-minute follow-up visit, and there is a sliding scale. Please ask.

About visiting us from Rolling Hills Estates

Rolling Hills Estates was founded to stay rural. It became Los Angeles County’s 60th city on September 18, 1957, with about 3,500 residents who, in the city’s own words, were united in their concern over maintaining the community’s rural atmosphere and equestrian lifestyle. That intention is still written into the city’s vision, which talks about enhancing its pastoral character by preserving open space and promoting the equestrian lifestyle. The city counts 25 miles of bridle paths, runs public riding rings, and owns a municipal boarding stable, the Peter Weber Equestrian Center on Crenshaw Boulevard. It is also divided into 30 neighbourhood areas, each with its own homeowners’ association. The Gazetteer puts its land at 3.577 square miles holding about 8,131 people, roughly 2,273 per square mile.

The city keeps its nature close as well as its horses. The George F Canyon Nature Center building is closed because of its age, but the canyon trail stays open and the city is developing a new building. Places like that matter more than they might seem: time outdoors and steady routine are often the first things to go when mood slips, and among the first things people notice coming back.

Care with us happens in one of two places: our office on Long Beach Boulevard in Long Beach, or your own home by secure video, which reaches anywhere in California. We have only a Sunday sample of the drive so far, taken at 11.53am on Sunday 4 October 2026 from City Hall on Palos Verdes Drive North. The 110 onto the 405 took about 26 minutes over 17.1 miles, Palos Verdes Drive North about 27 over 12.6 miles, and the 405 alone about 30 over 16.9. Sunday is a day the office is closed, so read those as the best case. We will not invent a weekday figure; it will be longer, and more so at rush hour.

Getting to us without a car is not practical. The nearest Metro rail station is Redondo Beach Station, about 7.73 straight-line miles away, which the Census geocoder places in Hawthorne. We checked Metro’s bus timetable for Tuesday 6 October 2026 and found no trip from the stops near City Hall to the stops by our office or to the A Line. Video is the way round that.

On coverage, almost everyone working-age here has something. Commercial insurance accounts for 86.3 percent, 65.7 percent through an employer and 20.6 percent bought directly. Only 1.8 percent are on Medi-Cal, which we do not bill at present, and 2.3 percent are uninsured. The survey estimates about 6.5 percent of civilian adults are veterans, with a wide margin in a city this size, and TRICARE and TriWest are carriers we accept.

The care is psychiatric, and it starts with listening. An unhurried evaluation, a working diagnosis by the end of it, medication when it is the right tool, and follow-up appointments often enough to change course. Weekly therapy sessions are not something this office runs, and if they would help we say so plainly at the start.

If you are reading because someone you love has grown withdrawn, hard to follow, or convinced of things that are not so, the page on schizophrenia explains one condition that can look like this. Signs like these have more than one possible cause, and an evaluation is how the cause is found. Schizophrenia itself is a condition of thinking and perception that is treatable and has nothing to do with personal weakness.

Rolling Hills Estates is in the county’s Service Area 8. If you are in crisis, call or text 988 at any hour.

Frequently asked questions

How much longer will the drive be on a weekday?

We do not know yet, and we would rather say so than guess. Our only sample was a Sunday at 11.53am, when the routes from City Hall ran between about 26 and 30 minutes. The office is closed on Sundays, so that range is the best case, and a weekday appointment near rush hour will take noticeably longer.

Is the scenic route down Palos Verdes Drive North a bad idea?

Not on the Sunday we checked. It was the shortest way at 12.6 miles and took about 27 minutes, against about 26 by the 110 and the 405 and about 30 on the 405 alone. On a weekday the freeway routes are the ones most likely to change, so the surface road may compare even better. We have not sampled it yet.

I served in the military. Do you take TRICARE?

Yes. TRICARE and TriWest are both among the carriers we accept. The survey estimate for veterans here is around 6.5 percent of civilian adults, though in a city of about 8,100 people that figure carries a wide margin of error. Bring your plan details when you call and we will confirm before booking.

Most people here buy their own insurance or have it through work. Which do you take?

Both kinds, in principle. About 65.7 percent of working-age residents have an employer plan and 20.6 percent buy coverage directly, and both are commercial insurance. Individually purchased plans differ in which providers they include, so give us the carrier and the exact plan name and we will check before anything is booked.

I keep checking things and repeating routines I know are pointless. Is that worth an appointment?

It is. Repeated checking, counting or cleaning that you feel you must do, even while knowing it makes little sense, can be obsessive compulsive disorder. It tends to be hidden for years out of embarrassment, and it responds to treatment. An evaluation is the place to say it out loud.

Can I avoid the drive altogether?

Yes. Video visits cover evaluation, diagnosis, medication and follow-up anywhere in California, and some people from the Peninsula never come in at all. Others prefer one visit in person at the start. Either is clinically sound.
