What we do
Evaluation and medication management for Palos Verdes Estates
We are a psychiatric practice, not a therapy group and not a clinic directory. That means diagnosis, medication, and someone who keeps track of how you are actually doing over time.
Psychiatry Services
Comprehensive psychiatric care, including diagnosis, treatment planning, and ongoing management led by a board-certified provider.
Medication Management
Careful selection, monitoring, and adjustment of psychiatric medications to maximize benefit and minimize side effects.
Psychiatric Evaluation
A thorough first assessment to understand your history and symptoms and build an accurate diagnosis and plan.
What a first visit looks like
A full psychiatric evaluation runs about an hour. We go through what brought you in, your history, what you have tried before and how it went, physical health and medications, and what you want to be different. You leave with a working diagnosis where one is clear, a plan, and a follow-up booked, not a referral to somewhere else.
Follow-ups are shorter, usually every few weeks at first and further apart once things are steady. Medication changes are made deliberately, one at a time, so it stays possible to tell what is working.
In person or by video, from Palos Verdes Estates
Both are real options and the clinical care is the same. Video visits are secure and available anywhere in California, which for most people makes the first appointment in person and the routine follow-ups from home or on a work break.
If getting here is the thing standing between you and treatment, take the video visit rather than skipping the care. That is what it is for.
New patients see Irine Achuamang, a psychiatric-mental health nurse practitioner. Dr. Cho provides collaborating physician oversight.
Paying for care
Coverage in Palos Verdes Estates, briefly
We are in network with 19 commercial carriers, including Aetna, Anthem, Beacon Health Options, Carelon, Cigna and others, and you can check your own plan below before booking anything. That list includes TRICARE and TriWest, so service members, veterans and military families are billed like anyone else here.
We do not currently take Medi-Cal managed care. If that is your coverage, we are a self-pay option rather than a covered visit, and it is better to know that now than at the front desk. Self-pay is $250 for a 60-minute initial psychiatric evaluation and $150 for a 30-minute follow-up visit, and there is a sliding scale. Please ask.

About visiting us from Palos Verdes Estates
Three different ways off the Peninsula, and our sample could not separate them. At 11.53am on Sunday 4 October 2026, from City Hall on Palos Verdes Drive West, the 405 measured 17.3 miles, Palos Verdes Drive West onto the 405 measured 17.4, and the 110 onto the 405 measured 20.1, and all three came back at about 33 minutes. When every route ties like that, the hill and the freeway are setting the time rather than the choice of road. That was a Sunday, when the office is closed, so 33 minutes is the quickest this trip gets. We have not sampled a weekday yet and will not guess at one. Expect it to be longer, and noticeably longer if your appointment means the 405 at rush hour.
Public transport does not make this journey work. Rail starts almost seven miles away, at Redondo Beach Station, 6.78 straight-line miles from City Hall and, by the Census geocoder’s reckoning, inside Hawthorne. We also read Metro’s bus timetable for a regular Tuesday, 6 October 2026, and found nothing from the stops around City Hall that reaches the A Line or the Long Beach Boulevard stops near us. For anyone who does not drive, a video appointment from home is the better plan, and it can carry the whole course of care.
Palos Verdes Estates describes itself as the oldest of the four cities on the Peninsula. It was incorporated on December 20, 1939, but the plan is older than the city. Deed restrictions were put on the land in 1923, and the community was laid out and landscaped by the Olmsted Brothers, with 28 percent of the land set aside as permanent open space. Incorporation came about to protect that land. After the 1929 crash the Palos Verdes Homes Association owed county taxes on the parkland, residents feared it might be sold to pay them, and in 1939 they voted to become a city. In 1940 the Association deeded the parklands to the new city. The La Venta Inn on Via del Monte was the first building erected here, and Malaga Cove Plaza is on the National Register of Historic Places. The city’s 4.776 square miles of land hold about 12,925 residents, roughly 2,706 per square mile.
On insurance the numbers are short to tell. Commercial coverage holds 85.6 percent of working-age residents, 66.3 percent on an employer plan and a large 19.3 percent on one they bought themselves. Medi-Cal, which this clinic does not bill at present, accounts for 6.0 percent, and just 1.7 percent have nothing. A self-purchased plan deserves a quick check: give us the carrier and the exact plan name when you call, because those plans vary in which providers they include.
People sometimes call on behalf of someone else, often a parent, and that is a good reason to get in touch. Withdrawal, poor sleep or loss of interest after a large change such as retirement or bereavement is worth an evaluation rather than another month of waiting to see if it lifts. Depression in older adults is common and frequently put down to age. With the person’s agreement, a family member can join the first appointment.
The care itself is psychiatric. An hour of history for the assessment, a working diagnosis at the end of it, and, if medication suits the problem, regular reviews to see that it is doing its job. Ongoing counselling is outside what this office provides, and when it would help we say so early enough for you to find it near home.
The county lists Palos Verdes Estates under its Service Area 8, and its ACCESS line, (800) 854-7771, is open around the clock. If you are in crisis, 988 answers calls and texts at any time.

Frequently asked questions
Which road should I take down from Palos Verdes Estates?
It barely mattered in our sample. At 11.53am on a Sunday the 405, Palos Verdes Drive West onto the 405, and the 110 onto the 405 all came back at about 33 minutes from City Hall. The office is closed on Sundays, so that is the quickest the trip gets. Allow more on a weekday, and a lot more if you are on the 405 at rush hour.
Do you have a weekday drive time for Palos Verdes Estates?
Not yet. Our only sample was taken on a Sunday, and we would rather tell you that than invent a weekday figure. What we can say is that 33 minutes is the floor, not the typical trip, and that video visits avoid the question entirely.
I am looking for help for my father, who seems withdrawn since he stopped working. Can you see him?
Yes, adults of any age, and families are welcome to help with the first call. A change in mood, sleep or interest after a major life shift such as retirement is worth an evaluation rather than a wait. Depression in later life is common and often missed. With his agreement, a family member can join the appointment.
Will a plan from Palos Verdes Estates usually be one you take?
Probably. About 85.6 percent of working-age residents hold commercial coverage, which is what we contract with, and 19.3 percent buy their plan directly rather than through an employer. With a directly purchased plan, check the network with us before booking, because those plans vary in which providers they include.
Is there any public transport from here to your office?
Not in a practical sense. The nearest Metro rail station is Redondo Beach Station, about 6.78 miles from City Hall and actually in Hawthorne, and on a regular weekday no Metro bus from near City Hall continues to our stops or to the A Line. A video visit is the realistic alternative.
Can the whole course of care happen by video?
It can. Evaluation, diagnosis, medication and follow-up all work by secure video anywhere in California. Some people still prefer to come in once at the start, because an hour in the room gives the first assessment firmer footing, and that choice is entirely yours.
