What we do

Evaluation and medication management for Lomita

We are a psychiatric practice, not a therapy group and not a clinic directory. That means diagnosis, medication, and someone who keeps track of how you are actually doing over time.

  • Psychiatry Services

Comprehensive psychiatric care, including diagnosis, treatment planning, and ongoing management led by a board-certified provider.

  • Medication Management

Careful selection, monitoring, and adjustment of psychiatric medications to maximize benefit and minimize side effects.

  • Psychiatric Evaluation

A thorough first assessment to understand your history and symptoms and build an accurate diagnosis and plan.

What a first visit looks like

A full psychiatric evaluation runs about an hour. We go through what brought you in, your history, what you have tried before and how it went, physical health and medications, and what you want to be different. You leave with a working diagnosis where one is clear, a plan, and a follow-up booked, not a referral to somewhere else.

Follow-ups are shorter, usually every few weeks at first and further apart once things are steady. Medication changes are made deliberately, one at a time, so it stays possible to tell what is working.

In person or by video, from Lomita

Both are real options and the clinical care is the same. Video visits are secure and available anywhere in California, which for most people makes the first appointment in person and the routine follow-ups from home or on a work break.

If getting here is the thing standing between you and treatment, take the video visit rather than skipping the care. That is what it is for.

New patients see Irine Achuamang, a psychiatric-mental health nurse practitioner. Dr. Cho provides collaborating physician oversight.

Paying for care

Insurance among Lomita's working-age residents

We are in network with 19 commercial carriers, including Aetna, Anthem, Beacon Health Options, Carelon, Cigna and others, and you can check your own plan below before booking anything. That list includes TRICARE and TriWest, so service members, veterans and military families are billed like anyone else here.

We do not currently take Medi-Cal managed care. If that is your coverage, we are a self-pay option rather than a covered visit, and it is better to know that now than at the front desk. Self-pay is $250 for a 60-minute initial psychiatric evaluation and $150 for a 30-minute follow-up visit, and there is a sliding scale. Please ask.

About visiting us from Lomita

Lomita keeps a steam locomotive in a residential neighbourhood. The Lomita Railroad Museum on West 250th Street shows a Southern Pacific steam locomotive and tender alongside a 1910 Union Pacific caboose, and its site lists it as open Friday to Sunday with free admission. We checked the address with the Census geocoder and it resolves to Lomita, which in a small city surrounded by larger neighbours is worth confirming rather than assuming. In front of City Hall on Narbonne Avenue the Takaishi Japanese Garden marks the city’s sister-city tie with Takaishi, Japan, dedicated in 1986.

The city’s own history is mostly a story about keeping its shape. Lomita takes its name from the Spanish for little hills. In the 1930s it was known as the Celery Capital of the World. By the early 1960s only 1.87 square miles were left of the original 7 square mile subdivision, and after a couple of failed attempts residents incorporated on June 30, 1964, partly to stop further annexation and partly to curb high-rise apartment building. Today the Census Gazetteer gives it 1.912 square miles of land and about 20,225 people, roughly 10,578 per square mile.

The drive to us takes a little under half an hour, and the two obvious routes trade places. At 11.30am on Tuesday 29 September 2026, from City Hall, the 405 took about 23 minutes over 13.6 miles and Lomita Boulevard onto the 405 about 24 over 9.6. West 223rd Street was close behind. At 11.53am on Sunday 4 October the boulevard won instead, about 21 minutes against 22. Four miles of difference in distance, a minute either way in time. We did not sample a rush hour.

Public transport is not a practical way to reach us. The two nearest rail stations are Redondo Beach Station, about 6.81 straight-line miles from City Hall and inside Hawthorne, and Del Amo Station, about 6.93 miles away on unincorporated county land. In Metro’s bus timetable for Tuesday 6 October 2026, no trip from the stops around City Hall reaches the A Line or the stops beside our office. Video visits are the alternative, and they work for every stage of care.

Coverage in Lomita is mixed. About 64.2 percent of working-age residents hold commercial insurance, which is what we contract with, 53.4 percent through an employer and 10.8 percent bought directly. About 15.7 percent are on Medi-Cal, which we do not currently bill, and 11.7 percent have no coverage, roughly one in eight. If you are uninsured, the self-pay rates and sliding scale are worth asking about before you book. About 4.0 percent of civilian adults are veterans, and TRICARE and TriWest are among the carriers we accept.

Our side of things is psychiatric. A first appointment of about an hour, a working diagnosis, a medication plan where one makes sense, and reviews to keep it on track. We do not run weekly therapy sessions here, and we will tell you if they belong in your plan so you can arrange them nearby.

Personality disorders are widely misunderstood. The phrase describes patterns of feeling and relating to people that take shape over years, often as an understandable response to what someone has lived through, and they are nothing to be ashamed of.

Lomita is in the county’s Service Area 8, and the ACCESS Center answers on (800) 854-7771 at any hour. If you are in crisis, call or text 988.

Frequently asked questions

Is Lomita Boulevard quicker than the 405?

It depends on the day, and only by a minute. At 11.30am on a Tuesday the 405 took about 23 minutes from City Hall and Lomita Boulevard onto the 405 about 24, even though the boulevard route is four miles shorter. On a Sunday at the same hour the order flipped, 21 against 22. Neither sample was a rush hour.

Can I reach you from Lomita by public transport?

Not usefully. The nearest rail stations are Redondo Beach Station, which is in Hawthorne, and Del Amo Station, each nearly seven miles from City Hall, and on a regular weekday no Metro bus from near City Hall connects to the A Line or our stops. A video visit is the practical alternative.

About one in eight working-age adults in Lomita has no insurance. What are my options?

Ask us about self-pay before booking. We publish our rates, offer a sliding scale on request, and will tell you plainly if it is not going to be affordable. If it is not, the county's ACCESS Center on (800) 854-7771 can point you to county services, and Lomita is in its Service Area 8.

Is a Medi-Cal plan something you can bill?

Not currently. About 15.7 percent of working-age residents in Lomita are on Medi-Cal, so it is worth saying before you book rather than after. That is the clinic's position for now, not a permanent one, and the county's ACCESS Center can direct you to Medi-Cal psychiatric care.

My worrying never really switches off, even when nothing is wrong. Could that be treated?

Yes. Worry that moves from one subject to the next, lasts most days for months and comes with tension, poor sleep or trouble concentrating can be generalised anxiety disorder. It is common, and it responds well to treatment. An evaluation is how we find out whether that is what is happening.

Can a family member come to the first appointment?

Yes, if you would like them there. Someone who knows you well can fill in history you may not remember, especially about childhood or about how things looked from the outside. You decide how much they stay for, and later visits can be just you, in person or by video.
