What we do
Psychiatric care for Santa Monica patients
We are a psychiatric practice, not a therapy group and not a clinic directory. That means diagnosis, medication, and someone who keeps track of how you are actually doing over time.
Psychiatry Services
Comprehensive psychiatric care — diagnosis, treatment planning, and ongoing management led by a board-certified provider.
Medication Management
Careful prescribing, monitoring, and adjustment of psychiatric medications to maximize benefit and minimize side effects.
Psychiatric Evaluation
A thorough first assessment to understand your history and symptoms and build an accurate diagnosis and plan.
What a first visit looks like
A full psychiatric evaluation runs about an hour. We go through what brought you in, your history, what you have tried before and how it went, physical health and medications, and what you want to be different. You leave with a working diagnosis where one is clear, a plan, and a follow-up booked — not a referral to somewhere else.
Follow-ups are shorter, usually every few weeks at first and further apart once things are steady. Medication changes are made deliberately, one at a time, so it stays possible to tell what is working.
In person or by video, from Santa Monica
Both are real options and the clinical care is the same. Video visits are secure and available anywhere in California, which for most people makes the first appointment in person and the routine follow-ups from home or on a work break.
If getting here is the thing standing between you and treatment, take the video visit rather than skipping the care. That is what it is for.
Care is provided by our psychiatric team — Irine Achuamang, MSN, PMHNP-BC and Austina Cho, MD.
Paying for care
Buying your own plan? Start here
Usually, yes. We are in network with 19 commercial carriers, including Aetna, Anthem, Beacon Health Options, Carelon, Cigna and others — you can check your own plan below before booking anything. That list includes TRICARE and TriWest, so service members, veterans and military families are billed like anyone else here.
We do not currently take Medi-Cal managed care. If that is your coverage, we are a self-pay option rather than a covered visit, and it is better to know that now than at the front desk. Self-pay is $250 for a 60-minute initial psychiatric evaluation and $150 for a 30-minute follow-up visit, and there is a sliding scale — please ask.
What that looks like in Santa Monica
Local coverage data, so you can see roughly where you fall before you call:
- Among Santa Monica adults aged 19 to 64, 61.6 percent hold employer-based coverage only and 17.4 percent buy a plan directly, putting 79.0 percent on commercial insurance. source
- That 17.4 percent buying coverage directly is roughly three times Whittier's 5.8 percent, a marker of how many people here are self-employed or freelance rather than on an employer plan. source
- In the same age band 10.5 percent of Santa Monica residents are on Medi-Cal or another means-tested program and 4.6 percent have no coverage at all. source
- Santa Monica has a population of 91,169 and a median household income of $114,885. source

About visiting us from Santa Monica
Start with the thing that decides how this works. There is no single train from Santa Monica to this office. Downtown Santa Monica Station is the western end of the E Line and sees 928 weekday trips, and Metro’s own timetable data shows that none of them continues through to Wardlow. The route exists, but it involves a change: the E Line east to Pico Station, then the A Line south, and about 84 minutes of sitting on trains before you count the time spent waiting to swap between them. Changing at Seventh Street / Metro Center instead adds roughly four minutes.
Driving is not obviously better. The 405 measured 27.3 miles and about 27 minutes when we sampled it, which sounds excellent until you notice we sampled it at 4.47am. A twenty-seven minute run from the coast to Long Beach exists only on an empty road at an hour nobody schedules an appointment for. The two alternative routes, the 405 onto the 105 and the 10 east onto the 110, both came in around 33 minutes under those same unusually kind conditions. We did not measure the peaks, and rather than estimate them we will simply say that a daytime crossing of the basin is a different proposition from any number on this page.
So the honest recommendation from Santa Monica is video, and we would rather lead with that than bury it. Video visits reach anywhere in California. You get the same evaluation, the same prescribing decisions and the same follow-up rhythm as anyone who walks through the door. If you can make one trip down for the initial assessment then it is worth doing, because a first appointment in the same room gives the diagnosis a bit more to rest on. If you cannot, that is not a reason to delay starting. From this far west, video is the ordinary way to do this rather than a lesser substitute.
Coverage is unlikely to be your obstacle here. Around 79 percent of working-age residents in Santa Monica hold commercial insurance, and that is the coverage we contract with. About 10.5 percent are on Medi-Cal or another means-tested program, which we are not billing at present, and 4.6 percent have no coverage at all. For roughly four people in five reading this, the money question is already answered.
Inside that 79 percent, though, there is a split worth naming. About 17.4 percent of working-age residents here buy their plan directly rather than getting it through an employer, roughly three times the rate in Whittier. That is a city with a lot of self-employed and freelance people in it, and directly purchased plans vary far more than employer ones do, so the sensible move is to check your specific carrier with us before the first appointment rather than assuming from the category. Santa Monica falls in the county’s Service Area 5.
A small piece of geography that surprised us while checking the Census figures: Santa Monica’s city limits contain more water than land. The Gazetteer puts it at 8.763 square miles of water against 8.409 of land, because the municipal boundary runs out into the bay. On the land part the city carries around 10,842 people per square mile, which makes it dense by any measure and very dense for somewhere with that much coastline. The city also runs its own bus network, the Big Blue Bus, independently of Metro, which is the sort of civic self-sufficiency that turns out to be common on this list.
On what this practice covers: we work on diagnosis and medication, and we review that medication often enough to tell whether it is actually helping. We do not provide weekly talking therapy. That matters more from a distance than nearby, because a therapist you see in person locally combined with prescribing handled by video is a perfectly sensible arrangement, and it is one we can help you put together at the first appointment rather than leaving you to assemble later.

Getting here
Travelling from Santa Monica
Distances and times below are Google's, timed on a weekday at the hour each route note states, in the traffic it labels usual for that route. Allow longer at the peaks each note says were not sampled.
By car
From Santa Monica City Hall on Main Street the 405 measured 27.3 miles and about 27 minutes, sampled at 4.47am Pacific on Thursday 10 September 2026, when the road was effectively empty. It is the floor of this trip, and the peaks were not sampled.
google.comchecked
In the same pre-dawn sample the two alternatives both took about 33 minutes, the 405 onto the 105 at 29.9 miles and the 10 east onto the 110 at 32.8 miles, so even with empty roads the direct route was six minutes better than either.

Common reasons people call from the Westside
Frequently asked questions
Is it worth coming in at all from Santa Monica?
Once, if you can manage it. The first evaluation goes better face to face, and it is the appointment that sets everything after it. But we are not going to pretend the journey is convenient. Twenty-seven miles across the basin is a genuine undertaking, and if it is the thing standing between you and starting, do the whole course on video instead.
Why does the drive time look so good?
Because we sampled it at 4.47am, and you should discount it accordingly. The 405 read 27.3 miles and about 27 minutes on a road with nothing on it. That combination does not exist at any hour you would realistically travel. Both alternative routes read about 33 minutes in the same empty conditions. We did not sample the peaks and will not guess at them.
Can I get there on the E Line?
Not directly. Downtown Santa Monica sees 928 weekday trips and not one of them continues to Wardlow, so you change once, taking the E Line east to Pico Station and the A Line south from there. That is roughly 84 minutes in the vehicle, plus however long you wait to change. Changing at Seventh Street / Metro Center instead is about four minutes slower.
I buy my own insurance rather than getting it through work. Does that work here?
Usually, and Santa Monica has an unusual number of people in exactly that position. About 17.4 percent of working-age residents here buy a plan directly, roughly three times the rate in Whittier. Directly purchased commercial plans are the kind we contract with. Check the carrier with us before your first appointment, because individual plans vary more than employer ones.
I sleep badly and I am not sure that counts as a reason to call.
It counts. Persistent insomnia is worth assessing in its own right, and it is also one of the more common ways anxiety and mood problems first show themselves. Whether the sleep is the condition or the symptom is a real clinical question rather than a formality, and it is the kind of thing an evaluation is for.
How does the video appointment actually work?
It is a secure video visit and it reaches anywhere in California, which for most people on the Westside is the whole answer. You get the same evaluation, the same prescribing and the same follow-up schedule. From this distance it is the normal way to work with us rather than the fallback, and treating it as second best is how good treatment gets postponed.
