What we do
Evaluation and medication management for Manhattan Beach
We are a psychiatric practice, not a therapy group and not a clinic directory. That means diagnosis, medication, and someone who keeps track of how you are actually doing over time.
Psychiatry Services
Comprehensive psychiatric care, including diagnosis, treatment planning, and ongoing management led by a board-certified provider.
Medication Management
Careful selection, monitoring, and adjustment of psychiatric medications to maximize benefit and minimize side effects.
Psychiatric Evaluation
A thorough first assessment to understand your history and symptoms and build an accurate diagnosis and plan.
What a first visit looks like
A full psychiatric evaluation runs about an hour. We go through what brought you in, your history, what you have tried before and how it went, physical health and medications, and what you want to be different. You leave with a working diagnosis where one is clear, a plan, and a follow-up booked, not a referral to somewhere else.
Follow-ups are shorter, usually every few weeks at first and further apart once things are steady. Medication changes are made deliberately, one at a time, so it stays possible to tell what is working.
In person or by video, from Manhattan Beach
Both are real options and the clinical care is the same. Video visits are secure and available anywhere in California, which for most people makes the first appointment in person and the routine follow-ups from home or on a work break.
If getting here is the thing standing between you and treatment, take the video visit rather than skipping the care. That is what it is for.
New patients see Irine Achuamang, a psychiatric-mental health nurse practitioner. Dr. Cho provides collaborating physician oversight.
Paying for care
Insurance in Manhattan Beach, in plain numbers
We are in network with 19 commercial carriers, including Aetna, Anthem, Beacon Health Options, Carelon, Cigna and others, and you can check your own plan below before booking anything. That list includes TRICARE and TriWest, so service members, veterans and military families are billed like anyone else here.
We do not currently take Medi-Cal managed care. If that is your coverage, we are a self-pay option rather than a covered visit, and it is better to know that now than at the front desk. Self-pay is $250 for a 60-minute initial psychiatric evaluation and $150 for a 30-minute follow-up visit, and there is a sliding scale. Please ask.

About visiting us from Manhattan Beach
Manhattan Beach is a small city with a long memory. It was incorporated on December 7, 1912, named after a Coney Island beach resort by the developer who planned it in 1901, and its pier was dedicated on July 5, 1920, running about 922 feet out with a rounded end designed to spare the pilings from the waves. The Roundhouse at the end followed in 1922. Within the city limits are 3.934 square miles of land holding about 34,210 people, which works out at roughly 8,696 residents per square mile. It is a small city, and that can matter for how some people prefer to approach psychiatric care.
The drive is simple. From City Hall on Highland Avenue, at 11.30am on Tuesday 29 September 2026, the 405 south measured 15.4 miles and about 26 minutes to our office. Google offered two alternatives and both were the same freeway reached a different way: Marine Avenue onto the 405 at 16.1 miles and about 28 minutes, and Artesia Boulevard onto the 405 at 15.2 miles and about 29. In other words, the question from here is only how you get onto the 405, and it costs two or three minutes at most. That was a late-morning Tuesday. Rush hour through the South Bay was not sampled, and it is reliably slower.
Rail is possible but not practical. There is no Metro station inside Manhattan Beach. The nearest to City Hall is Douglas Station, about 2.02 miles away, and it sits in El Segundo, as do Mariposa and El Segundo stations; Redondo Beach Station, at about 2.44 miles, is actually in Hawthorne. We read Metro’s regular weekday timetable for Tuesday 6 October 2026 and no train from Douglas runs through to Wardlow, the stop nearest us. The route is three trains: the K Line to Aviation / Century, the C Line east to Willowbrook / Rosa Parks, and the A Line south to Wardlow. That is about 41 minutes in the vehicle, and the waits between trains come on top.
Insurance is rarely the obstacle here. About 88.7 percent of working-age residents carry commercial coverage, the kind we contract with, and only 3.6 percent are on Medi-Cal, which we do not currently bill, with 2.5 percent uninsured. The detail worth noticing is how that coverage is held: 69.6 percent through an employer and 19.1 percent bought directly. Nearly one working-age resident in five buying their own plan is a lot. Individually purchased plans vary widely in network, so when you call, give us the carrier and the exact plan name and we will check it before anything is booked. The median household income is $204,306, against $150,245 in neighbouring Redondo Beach on the same survey, and about 4.4 percent of civilian adults are veterans. TRICARE and TriWest are both carriers we accept.
Now the part that the numbers do not show. In a city of thirty-four thousand people, someone who is struggling can feel that everyone knows everyone, and the worry about being seen walking into a psychiatrist’s office near home keeps people from making the call at all. The distance is useful here. Our office is fifteen miles away in Long Beach, and video visits from your own home cover every stage of care, including the first evaluation if you would rather start that way. Either route gets the same assessment and the same privacy.
What we do is specific. We assess, reach a working diagnosis, start medication where it helps, and review closely enough to change course when it does not. Common reasons for a first visit include anxiety that looks like success from the outside, low mood that never quite lifts, and sometimes a pattern of highs and lows that turns out to be bipolar disorder. We do not provide weekly talking therapy. If that belongs in the plan, we will say so early so you can find it nearby.
Manhattan Beach sits in the county’s Service Area 8, the same service area as Long Beach. If you are in crisis, call or text 988 at any hour, or reach the county’s ACCESS Center on (800) 854-7771.

Frequently asked questions
How long is the drive from Manhattan Beach?
About 26 minutes over 15.4 miles on the 405, measured from City Hall on Highland Avenue at 11.30am on a Tuesday. Reaching the freeway by Marine Avenue or Artesia Boulevard instead added two or three minutes. That was a quiet hour; the 405 through the South Bay at rush hour is a different road, so leave room.
I would rather not run into neighbours at a psychiatrist's office. Is that silly?
Not at all, and it is a common reason people look a little further from home. Our office is fifteen miles away in Long Beach, and video visits from your own home are an option for every stage of care, from the first evaluation to routine reviews. Either way, your visits are protected by the same privacy rules as any other medical appointment.
I buy my own health plan. Will you take it?
Quite possibly. About 19.1 percent of working-age residents here buy a plan directly, and a directly purchased plan is commercial coverage like an employer one. Networks on individual plans vary a great deal, so give us the carrier and the exact plan name when you call, and we will check before you book.
Is there any way to get to you without driving?
There is, but it is three trains. Douglas Station in El Segundo is about two miles from City Hall, and from there it is the K Line, the C Line and then the A Line to Wardlow, around 41 minutes in the vehicle plus the waits between them. For most people here the car or a video visit will be the better choice.
Everyone thinks I am doing well, but I am anxious all the time. Is that worth a visit?
Yes. Anxiety that stays hidden behind a successful job and a full calendar is still anxiety, and it tends to show up in sleep, irritability, and the constant sense that nothing is ever finished. Generalised anxiety disorder responds to treatment, and an evaluation is where we work out whether that is what is going on.
Do you treat bipolar disorder?
Yes. We assess for it carefully, because the low phases often bring people in while the high phases get missed, and treating it as ordinary depression can make things worse. Medication management for bipolar disorder means regular reviews, which suits video well once the diagnosis is settled.
