In short

Psychiatric care for Hermosa Beach

Hermosa Beach is about fourteen miles from our Long Beach office, roughly twenty-six minutes on the 405 in a Sunday late-morning sample, longer on a weekday. We provide psychiatric evaluation, diagnosis and medication management. Nearly nine in ten working-age residents hold commercial insurance we contract with, and video visits cover California.

What we do

Evaluation and medication management for Hermosa Beach

We are a psychiatric practice, not a therapy group and not a clinic directory. That means diagnosis, medication, and someone who keeps track of how you are actually doing over time.

  • Psychiatry Services

Comprehensive psychiatric care, including diagnosis, treatment planning, and ongoing management led by a board-certified provider.

  • Medication Management

Careful selection, monitoring, and adjustment of psychiatric medications to maximize benefit and minimize side effects.

  • Psychiatric Evaluation

A thorough first assessment to understand your history and symptoms and build an accurate diagnosis and plan.

What a first visit looks like

A full psychiatric evaluation runs about an hour. We go through what brought you in, your history, what you have tried before and how it went, physical health and medications, and what you want to be different. You leave with a working diagnosis where one is clear, a plan, and a follow-up booked, not a referral to somewhere else.

Follow-ups are shorter, usually every few weeks at first and further apart once things are steady. Medication changes are made deliberately, one at a time, so it stays possible to tell what is working.

In person or by video, from Hermosa Beach

Both are real options and the clinical care is the same. Video visits are secure and available anywhere in California, which for most people makes the first appointment in person and the routine follow-ups from home or on a work break.

If getting here is the thing standing between you and treatment, take the video visit rather than skipping the care. That is what it is for.

New patients see Irine Achuamang, a psychiatric-mental health nurse practitioner. Dr. Cho provides collaborating physician oversight.

Paying for care

Hermosa Beach insurance, by the numbers

We are in network with 19 commercial carriers, including Aetna, Anthem, Beacon Health Options, Carelon, Cigna and others, and you can check your own plan below before booking anything. That list includes TRICARE and TriWest, so service members, veterans and military families are billed like anyone else here.

We do not currently take Medi-Cal managed care. If that is your coverage, we are a self-pay option rather than a covered visit, and it is better to know that now than at the front desk. Self-pay is $250 for a 60-minute initial psychiatric evaluation and $150 for a 30-minute follow-up visit, and there is a sliding scale. Please ask.

About visiting us from Hermosa Beach

One bus line connects Hermosa Beach to Long Beach end to end. In Metro’s timetable for a regular Tuesday, 6 October 2026, Line 232 runs 45 trips from stops within half a mile of City Hall to the stop for Anaheim Street Station on the A Line, first about 4.43am and last about 12.10am. It is not quick. The bus takes about 73 minutes, and the A Line adds about 9 more to Wardlow, half a mile from our door. But it is a single seat for most of the way, which for someone who does not drive counts for a lot.

The train is faster in the vehicle and harder in practice. The nearest station is Redondo Beach Station, about 2.59 straight-line miles from City Hall, which the Census geocoder places in Hawthorne. From there it is the K Line to Aviation / Century, the C Line to Willowbrook / Rosa Parks, and the A Line to Wardlow, about 43 minutes of riding on a regular weekday, with two changes and the trip to the station on top. Most people will find the car simpler.

For the drive we have only a Sunday sample. At 11.53am on Sunday 4 October 2026, from City Hall on Valley Drive, the 405 took about 26 minutes over 14.4 miles, Aviation Boulevard onto the 405 about the same over 16.0, and Artesia Boulevard about 27 over 14.6. The office is closed on Sundays, so these are the best the trip gets. We have not measured a weekday and will not guess one.

Hermosa Beach is small and has looked after its shoreline for a long time. It received its charter from the state on January 14, 1907, and the city gives its area as 1.43 square miles, which holds about 19,063 people, roughly 13,368 per square mile of land. The first pier, built in 1904, was entirely wood and ran 500 feet out; today’s pier is 1,228 feet. The Strand boardwalk was surveyed in 1901 and laid in planks, and its last stretch at the north end was finished in cement in 1926. The city’s history notes that the deed of its oceanfront required the beach to be kept in perpetuity as a playground, free from commerce. It lists twenty parks, among them the 19.5 acre Hermosa Greenbelt, and the Historical Society keeps its home at the Community Center on Pier Avenue.

On coverage, about 88.6 percent of working-age residents hold commercial insurance, the kind we contract with, 72.8 percent through an employer and 15.8 percent bought directly. About 2.8 percent are on Medi-Cal, which we do not currently bill, and 2.4 percent are uninsured. About 4.5 percent of civilian adults are veterans, and TRICARE and TriWest are among our accepted carriers.

What we do is psychiatric: we listen to the full history, arrive at a working diagnosis, use medication when it is the right tool, and keep reviewing until it is clearly helping or clearly needs to change. Ongoing therapy sessions are not part of our service, and we will tell you early if they should be part of yours.

When thoughts about food, weight or body image start to organise the whole day, it may be an eating disorder. That is a medical condition, not a choice, and it is found in people of any gender, at any age.

The county’s ACCESS Center takes calls on (800) 854-7771 day and night. If you are thinking about suicide or in crisis, call or text 988.

Frequently asked questions

Is there really a bus from Hermosa Beach to Long Beach?

There is one line that makes the whole trip. Metro Line 232 runs from near City Hall to the stop for Anaheim Street Station in Long Beach, 45 trips on a regular weekday between about 4.43am and 12.10am. It is slow, about 73 minutes on the bus, then 9 more on the A Line to Wardlow, half a mile from us.

Would the train be quicker than the bus?

In the vehicle, yes. From Redondo Beach Station, about 2.59 miles from City Hall and actually in Hawthorne, the K Line, C Line and A Line take about 43 minutes to Wardlow on a regular weekday. That is two changes and a trip to the station first, though, so it is not obviously easier than the bus.

How long is the drive on a weekday?

We have not measured a weekday from Hermosa Beach yet. On a Sunday at 11.53am the 405 took about 26 minutes from City Hall, Aviation Boulevard onto the 405 about the same, and Artesia Boulevard about 27. A weekday will be slower than that, and the 405 at rush hour considerably slower.

Are most plans in Hermosa Beach ones you take?

Most are the kind we take. About 88.6 percent of working-age residents hold commercial insurance, 72.8 percent through an employer and 15.8 percent bought directly. Tell us the carrier and plan name and we will confirm before booking. Medi-Cal, held by about 2.8 percent here, is not something we currently bill.

I feel low most mornings and cannot find a reason. Is that enough to come in?

It is. Low mood that persists for weeks without an obvious cause, especially with poor sleep, lost interest or trouble getting going, deserves a proper evaluation rather than waiting for a reason to appear. Depression often does not need one. We will work out what is going on and what might help.

I am not sure my problem is serious enough for a psychiatrist. Should I still call?

Yes. People often wait until things are bad because they doubt they qualify, and there is no threshold to clear. If something has been getting in the way of work, sleep or relationships for a few weeks, an evaluation is a reasonable step, and sometimes the answer is reassurance and a simpler plan.
