In short

Psychiatric care for Lawndale

Lawndale is about thirteen miles from our Long Beach office, roughly eighteen minutes down the 405 on a Tuesday late morning. We provide psychiatric evaluation, diagnosis and medication management. About fifty-three percent of working-age residents hold commercial insurance we contract with. We do not currently bill Medi-Cal, which covers about a quarter.

What we do

Evaluation and medication management for Lawndale

We are a psychiatric practice, not a therapy group and not a clinic directory. That means diagnosis, medication, and someone who keeps track of how you are actually doing over time.

  • Psychiatry Services

Comprehensive psychiatric care, including diagnosis, treatment planning, and ongoing management led by a board-certified provider.

  • Medication Management

Careful selection, monitoring, and adjustment of psychiatric medications to maximize benefit and minimize side effects.

  • Psychiatric Evaluation

A thorough first assessment to understand your history and symptoms and build an accurate diagnosis and plan.

What a first visit looks like

A full psychiatric evaluation runs about an hour. We go through what brought you in, your history, what you have tried before and how it went, physical health and medications, and what you want to be different. You leave with a working diagnosis where one is clear, a plan, and a follow-up booked, not a referral to somewhere else.

Follow-ups are shorter, usually every few weeks at first and further apart once things are steady. Medication changes are made deliberately, one at a time, so it stays possible to tell what is working.

In person or by video, from Lawndale

Both are real options and the clinical care is the same. Video visits are secure and available anywhere in California, which for most people makes the first appointment in person and the routine follow-ups from home or on a work break.

If getting here is the thing standing between you and treatment, take the video visit rather than skipping the care. That is what it is for.

New patients see Irine Achuamang, a psychiatric-mental health nurse practitioner. Dr. Cho provides collaborating physician oversight.

Paying for care

Before anything else: coverage in Lawndale

We are in network with 19 commercial carriers, including Aetna, Anthem, Beacon Health Options, Carelon, Cigna and others, and you can check your own plan below before booking anything. That list includes TRICARE and TriWest, so service members, veterans and military families are billed like anyone else here.

We do not currently take Medi-Cal managed care. If that is your coverage, we are a self-pay option rather than a covered visit, and it is better to know that now than at the front desk. Self-pay is $250 for a 60-minute initial psychiatric evaluation and $150 for a 30-minute follow-up visit, and there is a sliding scale. Please ask.

About visiting us from Lawndale

Coverage first, because in Lawndale it decides more than the drive does. About 53.3 percent of working-age residents hold commercial insurance, which is what we contract with: 45.6 percent through an employer and 7.7 percent bought directly. About 25.4 percent are on Medi-Cal or another means-tested program, and we do not currently bill Medi-Cal. That is where the clinic stands today rather than a fixed policy, but it is the honest answer for roughly one working-age resident in four. Another 15.6 percent have no coverage at all. If you are in either group, ask about self-pay and the sliding scale before you book, and we will tell you straight whether it can work. If it cannot, the county’s ACCESS Center on (800) 854-7771 is the route into county psychiatric care, and Lawndale sits in its Service Area 8.

The drive itself is short. From City Hall on Burin Avenue at 11.30am on Tuesday 29 September 2026, the 405 measured 12.9 miles and about 18 minutes. Marine Avenue onto the freeway took about 19, and so did Hawthorne Boulevard. On Sunday 4 October at 11.53am the 405 came back at about 17. All of that is late morning, not rush hour, and the 405 through the South Bay is a different road at five o’clock, so allow for it.

Lawndale has an unusually close relationship with rail for a city that now has no station of its own. The Los Angeles and Redondo electric railway reached it in 1902 along what is now Hawthorne Boulevard, and the city’s own history records that the cars were olive green until 1911, when Pacific Electric absorbed the line and painted them red. Today the nearest station is Redondo Beach Station on the K Line, about 0.91 straight-line miles from City Hall, and the Census geocoder puts it in Hawthorne rather than Redondo Beach. From there it is three trains to us: the K Line to Aviation / Century, the C Line to Willowbrook / Rosa Parks, and the A Line to Wardlow, half a mile from our door. Metro’s timetable for Tuesday 6 October 2026 gives about 10, 17 and 16 minutes in the vehicle, 43 in all, with waits on top. The bus alternative is Line 125 from near City Hall to Compton Station, 44 trips that day between about 5.05am and 8.41pm and roughly 44 minutes on board, then 12 minutes on the A Line.

The city is compact and busy. Its 1.972 square miles of land hold about 30,781 people, roughly 15,609 per square mile. It was founded in March 1905 by the developer Charles B. Hopper, whose first sale day went badly enough that he held a second on February 25, 1906, which drew the first settlers. An oil boom followed in the 1920s and peaked between 1927 and 1929. On December 28, 1959, residents voted three to one to incorporate under the Lakewood Plan, to avoid being annexed by their neighbours, and Lawndale still contracts with the county for fire, sheriff and library services. Jane Addams Park on Firmona Avenue, with its three baseball fields, is the kind of place the city lists first.

What we provide is psychiatric care: a careful evaluation, a working diagnosis, medication where it helps, and follow-up close enough to adjust it. We do not offer weekly talking therapy, and if you need it we will say so early so you can arrange it locally. Follow-ups can be in person or by video anywhere in California.

Some adults start reading about autism after years of finding conversation, noise or sudden change harder than the people around them seem to. It is a lifelong neurodevelopmental difference, its traits vary from one person to the next, and it is not an illness to be fixed.

In a crisis, call or text 988 at any hour, day or night.

Frequently asked questions

I am on Medi-Cal. Can I see you?

Not as a billed Medi-Cal visit at the moment. About a quarter of working-age people in Lawndale are covered that way, so we would rather say it first than have you find out at booking. That is where the clinic stands now, not a permanent position. The county's ACCESS Center on (800) 854-7771 can point you to Medi-Cal psychiatric care in Service Area 8.

Nothing covers me right now. Is a visit still possible?

Ask us about self-pay before you book. About 15.6 percent of working-age residents here have no coverage, so it is a common question. We publish our self-pay rates and offer a sliding scale on request, and we will tell you plainly if it is not going to work rather than book you in.

Which freeway gets me there from Lawndale?

The 405, whichever street you use to reach it. From City Hall it was 12.9 miles and about 18 minutes at 11.30am on a Tuesday, and Marine Avenue or Hawthorne Boulevard onto the freeway each added about a minute. On a Sunday at the same hour it was 17. The peaks were not sampled.

Is the station near Lawndale actually useful for getting to you?

It is close, about 0.91 miles from City Hall, but it is three trains. Redondo Beach Station, which is in Hawthorne, puts you on the K Line, then the C Line, then the A Line to Wardlow, about 43 minutes in the vehicle before waits. Line 125 to Compton Station and then the A Line is the bus alternative, at roughly 56 minutes in the vehicle.

I freeze up in conversations and avoid anything social. Is that something you treat?

Yes. When fear of being judged keeps you out of classes, interviews or ordinary errands, that can be social anxiety disorder rather than shyness, and it responds to treatment. An evaluation sorts out what is going on, and video visits can be an easier way to start for people who find a waiting room hard.

Can my follow-ups be done by video?

Yes, anywhere in California. Eighteen minutes each way is a short trip from here, so plenty of people come in for every visit, but nothing clinical requires it after the first assessment. A half-hour medication check works well on a screen.
