Psychiatric Care for Huntington Park

This page starts with money, because in Huntington Park money decides whether the rest of it is any use to you. More working-age residents here are covered by Medi-Cal than by a commercial plan: 36.1 percent against 36.0 percent, close enough to call it level. A further 24.3 percent, close to one in four, have no coverage at all. We do not currently bill Medi-Cal managed care. But we will not imply a Medi-Cal plan is billable here when it is not, because someone acting on that would arrive expecting cover and leave with a bill and one more reason to distrust the whole business.

So here is what is actually available. If you hold commercial insurance, which about a third of working-age residents do, we contract with those plans and the process is ordinary. If you are uninsured, self-pay at our published rates with a sliding scale is sometimes workable, especially when what you need is a proper evaluation and then a medication that is inexpensive to continue. It is not workable for everyone and we will tell you which quickly. Now the practical detail, for anyone still reading who we can help. The drive is about half an hour. From City Hall on Miles Avenue the 710 measured 14.0 miles and roughly 29 minutes when we checked on a Tuesday late morning, and Florence Avenue onto the same freeway came in at 15.5 miles and about 30. The interesting one is the third: Long Beach Boulevard nearly the whole way is the shortest route at 12.8 miles and the slowest at about 32 minutes. It looks like the obvious choice on a map, one road most of the distance, and it costs you three minutes and a great many traffic lights. The peaks were not sampled and will be worse than any of these numbers.

Without a car it is harder, and the reason has a certain history to it. Huntington Park got its name in 1902, when two developers called Burbank and Baker renamed their hundred-acre tract and handed Henry Huntington a right-of-way along what is now Randolph Street, hoping to buy themselves a Pacific Electric line. It worked, and the name stuck. The city that renamed itself for a railway now has no rail station within its limits at all. Slauson, Florence and Firestone are one to two miles west and stand in unincorporated county land rather than in any city, and Vernon Station, confusingly, is inside Los Angeles rather than Vernon.

What you can do is take Metro’s Line 60 from Pacific Boulevard, at Florence or at Gage, straight down Long Beach Boulevard to Artesia Station, then change to Long Beach Transit’s Route 51 for the last stretch past our door. Two buses on one street. Ten Line 60 trips a day do run the entire length without a change, and we checked the timetable rather than the route map: every one of them passes between roughly 12.20am and 4.16am, on the hours when the A Line is shut and buses cover for it. It is a night service. It is not your appointment.

What we provide, for the people we can see, is a psychiatric evaluation that ends in a working diagnosis, medication chosen with care and then monitored properly, and follow-up that changes course when something is not working. We are not a counselling service and we do not provide weekly therapy. Depression that has run so long it feels like a personality, the aftermath of something that should not have happened, and panic attacks that have quietly rearranged where a person is willing to go are the three we see most from this part of the county. All three respond to treatment, and all three are commonly carried for years first.
