In short

Psychiatric care for Maywood

Maywood sits about fourteen miles from our psychiatric office, roughly twenty-six minutes on the 710. We offer evaluation, diagnosis and medication management rather than counselling. A Line trains run from Slauson Station through to Wardlow Station, under half a mile from our door, all day on weekdays, so reaching an appointment here does not require a car.

What we do

Psychiatric care for Maywood patients

We are a psychiatric practice, not a therapy group and not a clinic directory. That means diagnosis, medication, and someone who keeps track of how you are actually doing over time.

  • Psychiatry Services

Comprehensive psychiatric care — diagnosis, treatment planning, and ongoing management led by a board-certified provider.

  • Medication Management

Careful prescribing, monitoring, and adjustment of psychiatric medications to maximize benefit and minimize side effects.

  • Psychiatric Evaluation

A thorough first assessment to understand your history and symptoms and build an accurate diagnosis and plan.

What a first visit looks like

A full psychiatric evaluation runs about an hour. We go through what brought you in, your history, what you have tried before and how it went, physical health and medications, and what you want to be different. You leave with a working diagnosis where one is clear, a plan, and a follow-up booked — not a referral to somewhere else.

Follow-ups are shorter, usually every few weeks at first and further apart once things are steady. Medication changes are made deliberately, one at a time, so it stays possible to tell what is working.

In person or by video, from Maywood

Both are real options and the clinical care is the same. Video visits are secure and available anywhere in California, which for most people makes the first appointment in person and the routine follow-ups from home or on a work break.

If getting here is the thing standing between you and treatment, take the video visit rather than skipping the care. That is what it is for.

Care is provided by our psychiatric team — Irine Achuamang, MSN, PMHNP-BC and Austina Cho, MD.

Paying for care

What we can and cannot bill from Maywood

Usually, yes. We are in network with 19 commercial carriers, including Aetna, Anthem, Beacon Health Options, Carelon, Cigna and others — you can check your own plan below before booking anything. That list includes TRICARE and TriWest, so service members, veterans and military families are billed like anyone else here.

We do not currently take Medi-Cal managed care. If that is your coverage, we are a self-pay option rather than a covered visit, and it is better to know that now than at the front desk. Self-pay is $250 for a 60-minute initial psychiatric evaluation and $150 for a 30-minute follow-up visit, and there is a sliding scale — please ask.

What that looks like in Maywood

  • In the same age band 36.1 percent of Maywood residents rely on Medi-Cal or another means-tested public program and 26.1 percent, better than one in four, have no health coverage at all. source
  • Maywood has a population of 24,317 and a median household income of $60,943. source

About visiting us from Maywood

Maywood is 1.172 square miles. You can cross the whole city on foot in the time it takes to wait for a connecting bus, and its eastern edge is the Los Angeles River, where Riverfront Park opened in May 2008 as part of the river greenway with access at 60th Street and Waker Avenue and a link onto the river bike trail. That river runs south from here, and so does the freeway beside it, and about fourteen miles down both of them is this office. The geography of getting to us from Maywood is essentially the geography of the river.

The most useful thing on this page is that you do not need a car, and because that claim gets made carelessly a lot, here it is with the numbers attached. Maywood has no rail station of its own, and the nearest, Slauson Station, is about 3.1 miles away in a straight line, sitting on unincorporated county land rather than in any city. Getting out to it is the awkward part, and in a city of this size that stretch is longer than crossing Maywood end to end. But once you are on the platform it is one train. We read Metro’s timetable data rather than its route map, because those are different things: 240 weekday trips run southbound from Slauson straight through to Wardlow Station with no change, the first around 3.58am and the last around 1.12am, and the ride is about 24 minutes. Wardlow is inside Long Beach and under half a mile from our door in a straight line. All day, every weekday, at ordinary appointment times.

Driving, the answer is the 710, at 13.9 miles and about 26 minutes on a Wednesday around midday. There is a neat trap in the alternatives. The shortest route of the three is also the slowest: North Long Beach Boulevard trims the distance to 13.2 miles and costs you about 28 minutes. South Atlantic Boulevard onto the freeway is the longest at 15.3 miles and lands between them at about 27. Two extra miles gets you there first. We sampled one weekday late morning and not the peaks, so add time if your appointment falls into rush hour.

Now the part that decides whether any of the above is useful to you. In Maywood, 33.8 percent of working-age adults hold commercial insurance, which is what we contract with. About 36.1 percent are covered by Medi-Cal or another means-tested program, and 26.1 percent, better than one in four, have no coverage at all. We do not currently bill Medi-Cal. Put those together and a clear majority of working-age people in this city are people we cannot bill for a covered visit today. That is a present-tense position that depends on how the clinic grows, not a permanent one, and we are not going to imply otherwise, because someone acting on a softer version of that sentence would arrive expecting cover and leave with a bill.

What that leaves is worth spelling out rather than gesturing at. With commercial insurance, the process is ordinary and there is nothing more to say. Uninsured, self-pay at our published rates with a sliding scale is sometimes workable, and it is most workable for exactly the thing that tends to matter most: a proper evaluation, followed by a medication that is inexpensive to keep taking. We will tell you fast when it does not work rather than letting you find out at the desk. On Medi-Cal, the county line on (800) 854-7771 answers around the clock and Maywood sits in Service Area 7, and we offer that as a real route rather than a polite exit.

What we do is psychiatry in its narrow sense. Assessment ending in a working diagnosis, medication chosen with care and then actually monitored, and appointments that change course when something is not working. We do not provide counselling or weekly therapy, and if therapy is the half you need, you will hear it from us at the first visit.

From this part of the county the pattern we see most is worry that never settles on one subject and never switches off, low mood that has lasted long enough to be mistaken for character, and panic attacks that have quietly redrawn the map of where a person is willing to go. People arrive apologetic about all three, usually after years. The years are not evidence that it is untreatable. They are usually just evidence that nobody asked.

In a crisis, 988 answers by call or text at any hour, and the county line is (800) 854-7771.

Frequently asked questions

Can I really get to you without a car?

Yes, and here is the evidence rather than the assurance. Metro's timetable lists 240 weekday A Line trips from Slauson Station straight through to Wardlow Station, no change of train, the first around 3.58am and the last around 1.12am. The ride is about 24 minutes, and Wardlow is under half a mile from us in a straight line.

How far is Slauson Station from Maywood?

About 3.1 miles in a straight line from City Hall, which is the catch. Maywood is a little over a square mile, so the trip out to the station is longer than crossing the entire city. Plan a bus or a lift for that stretch. Once you are on the platform the rest of it is genuinely simple.

If I drive, which route?

The 710, at 13.9 miles and about 26 minutes in a Wednesday midday sample. The interesting part is that the shortest option is also the slowest: North Long Beach Boulevard is 13.2 miles and takes about 28 minutes. South Atlantic Boulevard onto the freeway is the longest at 15.3 miles and lands in the middle at about 27. Two extra miles arrives first.

What happens if I am uninsured?

Say so early and we will be straight with you. Better than one in four working-age people in Maywood have no coverage, so this is the common case rather than the exception. Self-pay at published rates with a sliding scale works for some, particularly for an evaluation plus an inexpensive ongoing medication. When it will not work, we say so rather than booking you in.

Do you bill Medi-Cal?

Not currently. About 36 percent of working-age residents here are covered that way, so for a large share of this city that is the answer that matters, and we are not going to bury it. It is present tense and may change as the clinic grows. In the meantime the county help line on (800) 854-7771 answers at any hour and Maywood is in Service Area 7.

I worry about everything, all day. Is that a condition or just how I am?

It may well be generalised anxiety disorder, which is defined less by what you worry about than by the fact that the worry moves from one subject to the next and rarely stops. People describe it as personality because it has been constant for years. Constancy is not evidence against treatment. It usually means it has gone untreated for a long time.
