Paying for care

Commercial plans, CalOptima and self-pay in Orange County

We do not currently take Medi-Cal managed care. If that is your coverage, we are a self-pay option rather than a covered visit, and it is better to know that now than at the front desk. Self-pay is $250 for a 60-minute initial psychiatric evaluation and $150 for a 30-minute follow-up visit, and there is a sliding scale. Please ask.

We are in network with 19 commercial carriers, including Aetna, Anthem, Beacon Health Options, Carelon, Cigna and others, and you can check your own plan below before you book. TRICARE and TriWest are on that list, so service members, veterans and military families are billed like anyone else here.

  • In the same age band, 15.2 percent rely on Medi-Cal or another means-tested program alone and 9.0 percent have no coverage.

    api.censusreporter.orgchecked

  • Among adults aged 19 to 64, 51.4 percent in Santa Ana carry commercial coverage and 26.0 percent rely on Medi-Cal alone, against 78.5 percent and 9.5 percent in Irvine.

The care

An Orange County visit, start to finish

This is a psychiatric practice. We diagnose, we manage medication, and we keep seeing you so the plan keeps fitting your life. We do not run therapy groups or weekly talk therapy.

  • Psychiatry Services

Comprehensive psychiatric care, including diagnosis, treatment planning, and ongoing management led by a board-certified provider.

  • Medication Management

Careful selection, monitoring, and adjustment of psychiatric medications to maximize benefit and minimize side effects.

  • Psychiatric Evaluation

A thorough first assessment to understand your history and symptoms and build an accurate diagnosis and plan.

The first appointment

Plan on about an hour. We ask what brought you in, what has and has not helped before, your health and current medications, and what you would like to feel different. You leave with a working diagnosis where one is clear, a plan, and the next visit already on the calendar.

Follow-ups are shorter. They come every few weeks while a plan settles and spread out once it holds, and any medication change is made one step at a time so its effect stays readable.

Video is the whole visit

A video appointment is a full psychiatric visit, not a lesser version. Evaluation, diagnosis and medication follow-up all happen on screen, from anywhere in California.

New patients see Irine Achuamang, a psychiatric-mental health nurse practitioner. Dr. Cho provides collaborating physician oversight.

Other places we hear from

  • Los Alamitos, Cypress and Seal Beach

Cities on the Long Beach side of the county; we timed the drive from Los Alamitos.

  • Anaheim, Fullerton and Buena Park

North-central Orange County, on the 5 and the 91.

  • Santa Ana and Garden Grove

Central Orange County, in the Census subdivision named for Anaheim, Santa Ana and Garden Grove.

  • Huntington Beach and Newport Beach

Coastal cities along Pacific Coast Highway, down the 405 from Long Beach.

  • Irvine and south county

From Irvine down to Mission Viejo, where we would start you on video.

Just over the county line

Our office is in Long Beach, close to the Orange County line. In a Monday sample at 7.41am, Los Alamitos City Hall was about 17 minutes from our door. Anaheim City Hall took about 46 minutes by the 22 and the 405, and Irvine City Hall about 37 minutes up the 405, so on that morning Irvine was the quicker of the two. Drives like those add up over months of follow-ups, so for Anaheim, Irvine and the rest of central and south Orange County, video is where we start.

The care does not change with the format. The same clinician, the same length of visit and the same careful approach apply whether you sit in our office or on your own sofa in Irvine.

Insurance first, because it decides a lot

Orange County is a strongly insured county. Close to seven in ten working-age adults carry commercial coverage, and our coverage check on this page will tell you quickly whether your plan is one we bill. CalOptima Health, the public county organized health system that offers Medi-Cal here, says it covers nearly one in three residents. We do not currently take Medi-Cal managed care, which includes CalOptima. If that is your coverage, CalOptima’s own Behavioral Health line is where it points members for mental health care, OC Links connects any resident to the county’s services, and we can still see you as a self-pay patient with a sliding scale.

North, central and south county are not the same place

Orange County lists 34 cities on about 793 square miles of land, roughly a fifth of the land in Los Angeles County, yet the differences inside it are large. Coverage is a good example. In Santa Ana, about half of working-age adults carry commercial insurance and a quarter rely on Medi-Cal alone. In Irvine, close to four in five carry commercial coverage and fewer than one in ten rely on Medi-Cal. That gap often decides whether your first call should be to us or to CalOptima’s Behavioral Health line.

Distance follows a similar line. The north county sits beside Long Beach, so an office visit is realistic from Los Alamitos. Our sampled drives from Anaheim and Irvine ran 46 and 37 minutes, and Mission Viejo and San Clemente lie further down the 5 again, so video is the sensible default for routine follow-ups there, with the office open on weekdays for the times you want it.

Before it starts, California asks us to explain telehealth and record your consent, which takes a minute. After that, the appointment is the same one we would hold across a desk in Long Beach.

Privacy at home

Orange County homes are well connected; Census figures put broadband in about 95 of every 100 households. The harder part is often privacy. A closed bedroom, a parked car or an empty office at work all do the job, as long as you can talk freely and you are in California during the visit.

If you need help between appointments

OC Links answers around the clock by phone and chat, and its clinicians can send a mobile crisis team. You can also call or text 988 at any hour. If you are in danger, call 911.

Orange County questions

Do you take CalOptima?

Not at this time. CalOptima Health offers Medi-Cal in Orange County, and we do not currently take Medi-Cal managed care. If CalOptima is your coverage, its own Behavioral Health line at 1-855-877-3885 is the first call for mental health care. We remain a self-pay option, with a sliding scale.

Is your office close to Orange County?

Close to the north of it. From Los Alamitos City Hall, Google's recommended route took about 17 minutes at 7.41am on a Monday, in the morning peak. Anaheim City Hall was about 46 minutes away and Irvine City Hall about 37. For the rest of the county, video visits remove the drive altogether.

Can I start on video and come in later?

Yes. Under California's telehealth law, agreeing to video does not preclude in-person care later in the same treatment, so you can move to the Long Beach office if that suits you better.

Do you have an office in Orange County?

No. Our one office is in Long Beach, near the county line. Orange County patients see us there or by video.

Who can I call at night in Orange County?

OC Links answers by phone and chat around the clock, and its clinicians can send a mobile crisis team. The 988 Lifeline also answers at any hour.

How do I check whether my plan covers you?

Use the coverage check on this page, or ask when our office calls to confirm your appointment. If CalOptima is your plan, see the CalOptima answer above.
