Both freeway options are worse: Lakewood Boulevard onto the 405 is longer and slower, and cutting across on Carson Street runs to fifteen. If your instinct is to reach for the 405 because that is what you do for everything, this is the one trip where surface streets win outright. There is no train either — the Metro station called Lakewood Blvd sits on the C Line up in Downey, seven miles north, named for the boulevard rather than the city.

Lakewood exists because its residents did not want to be part of Long Beach: after 17,500 houses went up in thirty-three months, the people who bought them organised against annexation and incorporated in 1954. That is worth a line here for a clinical reason rather than a historical one. A town built all at once to a single plan is an unusually easy place to hold a routine together, and a lot of psychiatric treatment leans on routine — same wake time, same walk, same evening, while a medication finds its level. On a legible grid that is less work than most people expect.

That origin still shows up in one number. About 3,265 Lakewood residents are veterans, 5.1 percent of civilian adults, roughly double the share in Hawthorne, which is what happens when a town is built at speed for families starting over after a war and then stays put for seventy years.
