Paying for care

Coverage in Riverside, San Bernardino and Ventura counties

We are in network with 19 commercial carriers, including Aetna, Anthem, Beacon Health Options, Carelon, Cigna and others, and you can check your own plan below before you book. TRICARE and TriWest are on that list, so service members, veterans and military families are billed like anyone else here.

We do not currently take Medi-Cal managed care. If that is your coverage, we are a self-pay option rather than a covered visit, and it is better to know that now than at the front desk. Self-pay is $250 for a 60-minute initial psychiatric evaluation and $150 for a 30-minute follow-up visit, and there is a sliding scale. Please ask.

Coverage across Greater Los Angeles

  • Across the combined statistical area, 51.1 percent of adults aged 19 to 64 have employer-based coverage only and 9.8 percent buy their own plan, 60.9 percent commercial; 20.2 percent rely on Medi-Cal alone and 10.9 percent are uninsured.

    api.censusreporter.orgchecked

  • Commercial coverage among working-age adults is 66.7 percent in Ventura County, 57.6 percent in Riverside County and 53.1 percent in San Bernardino County.

A metro bigger than any one county

Greater Los Angeles has no single boundary, so we use the one the Census Bureau draws. Its Los Angeles-Long Beach combined statistical area holds about 18.5 million people. That reaches far past Los Angeles County, into the Inland Empire and Ventura County, and Orange County alongside them.

Across that metro, getting to one appointment is rarely the hard part. Keeping up with follow-ups every few weeks is. On a Monday morning, at 7.40 and 7.41am, Google put Ontario City Hall about 1 hour 28 minutes from our door, the Riverside County Administrative Center about 1 hour 34 minutes, and the Thousand Oaks Civic Arts Plaza about 1 hour 40 minutes, all in morning-peak traffic. Google said a slowdown and construction were adding 34 minutes to the Thousand Oaks trip that morning, so that one was a bad day. Even so, that is a lot of freeway for a thirty-minute follow-up, which is why we lead with video across the metro.

Two outlines the Census draws

The Census Bureau draws more than one outline around Los Angeles. Its Los Angeles-Long Beach-Anaheim metro area is Los Angeles and Orange counties together, close to 13 million people. Its wider combined area adds Riverside, San Bernardino and Ventura counties, for about 18.5 million. We use the wider one here, because Ontario, Riverside and Thousand Oaks belong to it, and from all three of them we would start your care on video.

Each county also keeps its own front door for mental health care. Orange County’s OC Links answers by phone or chat at any hour. Riverside’s CARES Line handles access and referrals around the clock, and San Bernardino keeps a 24-hour access line of its own. For Ventura County we could not verify a current line while writing this page, so we have not listed one; your health plan or 988 is a safe first call there.

What we mean by mental health services

Mental health services is a broad phrase. It covers therapists and counselors, support groups, county clinics, crisis teams and psychiatric practices. Ours is the psychiatric kind. We evaluate what is going on, make a diagnosis where one is clear, and manage medication with regular follow-up for as long as it helps.

That focus is useful to know before you call. If you want weekly talk therapy, a therapist is your first stop. If you need a medication evaluation, or a second look at a treatment that is not working, that is our work.

How video works across the metro

Under California’s telehealth law, agreeing to video care does not shut you out of in-person visits later in the same treatment. Our office is on Long Beach Boulevard, and if you ever want to meet there on a weekday, you can.

Coverage changes county by county

Insurance looks different across the metro. Two in three working-age adults in Ventura County carry commercial coverage, compared with closer to half in San Bernardino County. Check your plan with the coverage tool on this page before booking. We do not currently take Medi-Cal managed care. The county lines listed further down, for Los Angeles, Orange, Riverside and San Bernardino counties, connect residents to each county’s own behavioral health services.

Crisis help, county by county

Psychiatric visits are planned care. If you need help sooner, call your county’s line from the list on this page, or call or text 988 from anywhere. In an emergency, call 911.

The care

Psychiatric services, not a directory

This is a psychiatric practice. We diagnose, we manage medication, and we keep seeing you so the plan keeps fitting your life. We do not run therapy groups or weekly talk therapy.

  • Psychiatry Services

Comprehensive psychiatric care, including diagnosis, treatment planning, and ongoing management led by a board-certified provider.

  • Medication Management

Careful selection, monitoring, and adjustment of psychiatric medications to maximize benefit and minimize side effects.

  • Psychiatric Evaluation

A thorough first assessment to understand your history and symptoms and build an accurate diagnosis and plan.

The first appointment

Plan on about an hour. We ask what brought you in, what has and has not helped before, your health and current medications, and what you would like to feel different. You leave with a working diagnosis where one is clear, a plan, and the next visit already on the calendar.

Follow-ups are shorter. They come every few weeks while a plan settles and spread out once it holds, and any medication change is made one step at a time so its effect stays readable.

Video is the whole visit

A video appointment is a full psychiatric visit, not a lesser version. Evaluation, diagnosis and medication follow-up all happen on screen, from anywhere in California.

New patients see Irine Achuamang, a psychiatric-mental health nurse practitioner. Dr. Cho provides collaborating physician oversight.

Greater Los Angeles questions

What counts as Greater Los Angeles here?

We use the Census Bureau's Los Angeles-Long Beach combined statistical area, a metro of about 18.5 million people that reaches well past Los Angeles County into its neighbors, including Riverside, San Bernardino and Ventura counties.

Do I have to come to Long Beach from the Inland Empire?

No. In our Monday morning-peak sample, Ontario City Hall was about 1 hour 28 minutes from the office at 7.41am and the Riverside County Administrative Center about 1 hour 34 minutes at 7.40am. Video visits cover the evaluation and every follow-up, and the office stays available on weekdays if you ever want to come in.

Is a psychiatric practice the same as a mental health service?

It is one kind. Mental health services also include counseling, support groups and county programs. We provide the psychiatric part: evaluation, diagnosis and medication management.

Do you take health plans from the Inland Empire?

Several of the carriers we bill are national companies, so plans sold in Riverside or San Bernardino County may be among them. Check your own plan with the coverage tool on this page before you book.

Why is Ventura County's mental health line not listed?

We could not verify a current number from Ventura County's own website while writing this page, so we would rather list none than a stale one. Your health plan or 988 is a safe first call there.

How is this page different from your Los Angeles County page?

That page covers one county. This one covers the wider metro the Census Bureau draws around it, which adds Orange, Riverside, San Bernardino and Ventura counties.
